Becomes the best all-rounder in the world (2007-2009)

Shakib Al Hasan's average on October 26, 2019

Despite being an all-rounder, Shakib was considered a batsman, not a bowler, until the Bangladesh tour of New Zealand in October 2006. Despite batting at number seven in the Tests, he was one of the top five batsmen in ODIs. Ahead of the tour, coach Jimmy Siddons said Shakib would be playing the Test series as a specialist bowler. Shakib did not disappoint the coach. He took 6 wickets for 36 runs in the first innings of the opening Test. Until then, this was the best bowling figure in any Bangladeshi bowler's Test. Bangladesh lost the series 2-0, but Shakib became the highest wicket-taker in the series with 10 wickets at an average of 16.60. Bangladesh won the first match of the ODI series. It was Bangladesh's first win in an ODI against New Zealand. [30] In the end, however, the hosts were 2-1 in the series. [31] [32]

The following month, Bangladesh toured South Africa to play two Tests, three ODIs, and a T20I. Shakib's bowling performance continues here. Co-captaincy and captaincy (2009-2010)

At the beginning of 2009, Ashraful's captaincy was in question due to several consecutive defeats and long runs in Bangladesh. From then on, the BCB started considering Shakib as a 'potential captain' of the national team. The BCB, however, was not inclined to impose the burden of captaincy on Shakib's shoulders so quickly. Later, in the first round of 'T20 World Cup, 2009', after losing to Bangladesh, Ireland and India, the issue of Ashraful's captaincy came to the fore again. In June 2009, Mashrafe was named captain and Shakib co-captain.

Bangladesh toured the West Indies in July. In the first Test, Mashrafe suffered a knee injury. On the last day of the game, he could not get on the field and Shakib took the captaincy in his place. Shakib seemed to shine in a new form after getting the responsibility of the captain. He and Mahmudullah led Bangladesh's bowling attack and together took a total of 13 wickets to give the country a historic victory. [39] This was Bangladesh's first Test victory outside the country. The first and second overall Test victory against the West Indies. [40] The West Indies, however, was a bit inexperienced. The West Indies Cricket Board and the 'players' association' were at loggerheads over salaries. The first XI of the team dropped out of the series and a whole new team came to play on the field. Seven players made their Test debuts in this match. The team was led by Floyd Reifer, who has played only four Tests in the last 10 years.

West Indies

Due to Mashrafe's absence due to injury, Shakib led Bangladesh for the rest of the series. At the age of 22 years and 115 days, he started his journey as the youngest captain in Bangladesh and the fifth-youngest in history. Under Shakib's leadership, Bangladesh won the second Test and won the first Test series outside the country. - He holds the two prizes in his pocket. He became the second-highest scorer in the entire series with 159 runs at an average of 53.00 and the joint highest wicket-taker with Kemar Roach with 13 wickets at an average of 17.6. Before the start of the ODI series, Bangladesh went to Sri Lanka to play 'Asia Cup, 2010'. Bangladesh lost in each of the three matches. Shakib and Shafiul became the joint highest wicket-takers in Bangladesh with 5 wickets each.

Shakib could not adapt himself as the captain. He was also failing to give his best as an all-rounder. Due to these two complications, Shakib decided to step down as captain in July. The responsibility of the team again falls on the shoulders of Mashrafe. Siddons explained, "Look, Shakib made the decision knowingly. His form was bad at-bat. He needs some rest. On his return from Sri Lanka, Bangladesh was able to beat England in international cricket for the first time in the second ODI of the series. [59] 2-1 at the series rate. At the end of the tour of England, Bangladesh was scheduled to play two ODIs against Ireland and one ODI against Scotland and the Netherlands. This is Bangladesh's first series win against a full-fledged Test team. Shakib became the highest scorer of the series with 213 runs and became the highest wicket-taker with 11 wickets.

In December, Zimbabwe came to Bangladesh to play a five-match ODI series. Mashrafe has returned to the field after recovering from injury. Despite this, Shakib was retained as the captain of the team. Shakib said in a press conference after the defeat in the first match, "I was not mentally ready to take the responsibility and I am not satisfied with my role as captain. " Bangladesh won the remaining three matches of the series, one match was abandoned due to rain.
